David Arquette is having the time of his life on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. However, that's not all--he and Courteney Cox are still working together, which suits him just fine.
Of course Coco's parents take that job seriously. They stay close friends to insure that their daughter will always feel their joint support. The duo is also creatively linked. Together, they are working on several TV deals.
"We are doing the Celebrity Name Game," says Arquette. "Craig Ferguson will host that." He and Courteney also recently sold a comedy to ABC. It sounds vaguely familiar too. It's about a group of friends.
David Arquette and Courteney Cox are still business partners and neither of them is ready to give up that connection, at least for now. "We always pitch things," says Arquette. It sounds like the duo gets their creative juices flowing best when they are together.
It is nice to see a Hollywood couple that can keep it together for themselves as well as their child. If only more stars could act in such an adult fashion. It is refreshing to say the least. Undoubtedly, it also makes little Coco's life a lot easier.
Right now, of course, Coco is just enjoying seeing her daddy on the Dancing with the Stars dance floor. "It was sweet to see her there," says David Arquette. "It's a dream for her to see all these amazing dancers and then for her dad to come out with Kym and do his routine. She loved it!"
The fans loved it too, David, as did the judges. Arquette's score was 18, which put him solidly in the center of the pack. Chances are he'll be around to dance for Coco a little while longer.

'The Lion King' reigns at US box office
The movie did far better than the studio executives had expected, earning 29.3 million dollars from 2,330 venues in the United States and Canada during the weekend, Englishnews reported.
The previously held record was Pixar's 'Toy Story' and its 2009 3D sequel, which garnered 12.5 million dollars in the opening weekend.
Being the biggest blockbuster from Disney, the movie was also made into two made-for-video sequels, a television series and a Broadway musical.
The movie was reproduced in its 3D version mainly due to the existence of a huge audience in their twenties and families, who account for 74 percent of movie goers.
The re-release was originally slated as a two-week limited theatrical run.

Lockout slows NBA players’ charity events
If it’s late September, it must be charity-event time in the NBA. At least, it usually would be—players would be flocking back to their teams’ cities and the charitable foundations of their teammates would be humming with get-togethers and fund-raisers. But one of the consequences of the league’s lockout has been a reduction in those kinds of events.
As one agent said, “There isn’t as much of an appetite for that right now. There’s too much uncertainty, you can’t work with the team to help with arrangements, the costs of bringing in players from all over are prohibitive, and most guys want to hunker down until they see how things play out.”

On Saturday in Orlando, Magic guard Chris Duhon will host a charity bowling event to benefit Families in Transition, with proceeds going to homeless children in the Orlando area. Two of his teammates—J.J. Redick and Quentin Richardson—will definitely be in attendance, Duhon said. But in a normal September, much of the team would show up
“It’s kind of tough now just with the uncertainty of us having a season, so guys are kind of in new routines and doing their own things,” Duhon said. “I mean, the hard part is being able to get the participation of your teammates you’d normally get. I know if we had a season starting on time, guys would be in town and a lot of the guys would be willing to go and show up. But without that, not knowing when we’re going to start and guys doing their own thing, trying to figure out their situation, it is kind of hard as far as participation goes. I can see where it is hard.”
Besides the potential loss of paychecks and the cancellation of summer leagues, one of the ways that the lockout will most affect players is simply by breaking their offseason routines.
Whether it’s on-court work or off-court bonding, the longer the lockout drags on, the more impossible it gets for teams to re-create their usual offseasons.
“It’s definitely a little different, because usually after Labor Day, that is when you start to head back toward the team and start to work out with the guys,” Duhon said. “But it’s hard not to have that access and not to be around the guys for that long of a time.”
But the Magic will, at least, attempt to get themselves together in the coming weeks, according to Duhon. Point guard Jameer Nelson is arranging for the team to get together and work out next week in Orlando, and center Dwight Howard is hoping to do the same thing the following week.
“We’re trying to go about our business the right way and get together,” Duhon said.

Cut the cord between college football and the NFL
It's time to recognize that Division I college football is really a minor league professional sport and treat it like the pro game it is.
That means making drastic, fundamental changes that end college football's role as the National Football League's sole development agency and removing the nonstudent players from campus so America's universities can focus on their real mission: education.
Until such measures are taken, college football will remain a corrupting influence on both society and higher education. Players, coaches, administrators, trustees, students and even some faculty conspire to hide the deceptions. Let's end the hypocrisy now.
Attempts to reform college football historically have failed. After many decades of rules changes, little has changed: Last year, 2004 national champion University of Southern California was stripped of its title; this year, 2001 national champion Miami and 2002 national champion Ohio State are in hot water.
Reform attempts fail because they ignore the extreme level of fan and alumni support that college football enjoys, the hoped-for rewards from television and bowl games - which include not just money but publicity - and the fact that playing college football is the only path for talented high school players to get to the pros. As long as these three factors remain, corruption is inevitable.
Most cheating begins with offering scholarships to players who don't belong in college.
Winning requires the best athletes, not the best students, and it's obvious to any objective observer that many Division I football players are not at home in the classroom; at best, they are faking it. They are steered into meaningless classes with "safe" professors; they plagiarize; they get illicit tutoring - whatever it takes to retain eligibility. Many coaches, alumni, administrators and faculty facilitate the charade.
Even schools with high admission standards routinely recruit athletes with ninth-grade academic skills. At the top-tier University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it recently was revealed that about half the players in the last six football recruiting classes were admitted through a special committee process required for students who fall below minimum academic requirements.
A career in professional football requires physical toughness and aggression - big muscles, not a degree in English or physics. So it's irrational to expect a player's chance for a possible pro career to depend on his academic performance. Some of these players will cheat to get by; to expect otherwise suggests a complete lack of understanding of human nature and incentives.
Further complicating the matter are the often-unrealistic demands on players' time, even for serious scholar-athletes.
Many say that colleges exploit players by earning profits from their talent and giving little in return, and should therefore pay them salaries. While serious student-athletes - and there are many - do improve their futures by earning real degrees, academically unqualified athletes often don't benefit much from their time on campus.
They become prime candidates to accept illegal benefits from corner-cutting coaches, overzealous boosters and rogue agents. Their talents have value, but a college education is the wrong form of payment. Rachel McCoy, wife of former University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, discussed the pressures players faced in a candid ESPN radio interview this summer that had many wondering whether Texas would be the next school investigated by the NCAA. "There's no way that college kids can really, honestly say no to all this stuff," she suggested.
The only way to end the cheating and hypocrisy is to eliminate the one corrupting principle that can be eliminated - requiring college for prospective professional football players.
Cutting the cord may sound impossible, but Major League Baseball provides a hopeful model for doing it.
Major League Baseball subsidizes its own minor leagues, instead of getting colleges to foot the bill for player development. As a result, college baseball is thriving with good players who actually want an education. But players who would rather forgo college also have a route into the pros: baseball's minor leagues, where they can be paid a salary while improving their skills.
To adopt such a model, the NCAA would have to agree to severely punish any school that admits players who have little chance of academic success at that institution. This means many outstanding athletes will never play Division I football.
The NFL certainly wouldn't like it - it would have to subsidize the new minor leagues.
But the alumni would still have football teams to cheer (manned with real students), athletes with more brawn than brain would still have a route into the pros, and universities could finally end their hypocrisy.

Tokyo Girl's Collection Is the Anti-Fashion Show
More than 30,000 fashionistas flocked to Japan's largest fashion event, the Tokyo Girl's Collection -- or TGC this weekend -- a bi-annual show that combines the country's top fashion brands with popular music acts.
Now in its sixth year, the six hour show has established itself as the epicenter of Japan's "kawaii," or cute culture, a culture that has gained a global following in recent years.
On Saturday, the Saitama Super Arena, just outside of Tokyo, looked more like a cross between a concert and circus than a fashion show. Popular models strutted their looks down the runway, as adoring fans screamed their names, while other show-goers crowded booths featuring everything from makeup to a foot massage. In between, the TGC stage featured a mini ballet performance, and an appearance by Cirque de Soleil.

"Our goal is to create festival like atmosphere, that celebrates fashion," said show producer Maki Okuda.
Consider the TGC the "anti-fashion" show where the focus is on accessibility and tech-savvy shopping, not just cutting edge fashion. Unlike New York and Paris fashion shows, where big name brands unveil high-priced looks on the runway months before they reach retailers, outfits featured at the TGC can be purchased immediately, for an affordable price.
H&M and American Apparel Join Tokyo Girl's Collection
"TGC is not about how many buyers come or who sits in the front row," said Okuda. "Any girl, as long as they buy a [$60] ticket can go and enjoy the fashion show."
The idea for TGC was born out of mobile phone site "Girlswalker.com," which featured fashion trends and horoscopes. Okuda says the site organized a fashion show to mark its fifth anniversary six years ago, to feature what she calls "real clothes" or casual, everyday wear. Success of the initial show led to a larger event the following year. Today, the show is held twice a year in Tokyo, with separate shows in Nagoya and Okinawa. It has also taken its event abroad, to Paris and Beijing.
The show's tech-savvy marketing has helped elevate its success. Looks on the runway are sold online, so audience members can purchase the clothes from their smartphones instantly. Booths that exhibit at the event come equipped with a cell phone "reading" machine. Consumers must tap their cell phones on the machine in order to get freebies. In return, companies get immediate access to consumer information including email addresses.
"Because TGC is such a major event, there is a real value in setting up booths to help with business," said Hiroshi Ito, who handles marketing for a small spa.
While the event mainly draws on domestic brands, foreign companies are starting to take note. Swedish retail giant H & M, as well as American Apparel set up booths at the show for the first time this year. American designer Jill Stuart has become an annual participant, not only showing her collection but setting up a makeup booth, allowing girls to test out the products, and walk away with free samples.
For attendees, the TGC offers a chance to get up and close to popular models, who enjoy celebrity status in Japan. The event also gives the fashionistas an opportunity to get a taste of modeling. Hair care companies set up mini-salons, where attendees can get their hair done, with the latest products. H & M set up a photo studio, so people could try on their latest looks, while getting a free photo taken on a set similar to the one featured in the brand's catalog.
"I felt like an actual fashion model and this was really fun," said 12-year-old Saki Shingu.
Event organizers dedicated this year's show to victims of Japan's triple disasters, with the theme "Smile for _,," a fill-in-the-blank effort to not only lift the spirits of a reeling country, but revive a retail sector that has struggled, like the rest of the country, in the aftermath of the disaster. TGC models also participated in volunteer activities, charity auctions, and live streamed the fashion show to towns along Japan's ravaged coast.

UGGs is ingenious: a paradox?
I always thought the Ugg boot company as an opportunity, on the way to the laundry, and I'm not sure that this good form, you can do in shiny satin with sequins.

Deckers Posts Loss; Ups Outlook
Deckers Outdoor Corporation (NASDAQ:DECK), the maker of sheepskin boots and slippers, recently delivered a loss per share in the second-quarter 2011 results owing to costs associated with the transition to a wholesale business model from a distributor business model, opening of new stores and other investments. Despite higher costs, Deckers projects an improved outlook for fiscal 2011 driven by the acquisition of the Sanuk brand.
The company has posted a quarterly loss per share of 19 cents, lower than the loss expectation of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents. However, Deckers reported positive earnings of 23 cents in the prior-year quarter.
Let’s Dig Deep
Deckers said that total net sales jumped to $154.2 million, up 12.5% from the prior-year quarter, which came ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $143 million. The company’s robust growth in all its divisions and sustained focus on new product introductions along with geographic expansion have helped achieve increased growth.
Domestic sales for the quarter surged 26.9% to $82.8 million in the quarter. Sales also increased in the international wholesale channels as well as the consumer direct channels.
UGG brand net sales surged 8.0% to $108.3 million and Teva brand net sales grew 29.1% to $40.3 million. Combined net sales of Deckers’ other brands for the quarter were $5.7 million as against $5.6 million in the prior-year period.
Sales for the retail store business jumped 102.2% to $20.1 million, propelled by same-store sales growth of 23.6%, and the opening of 11 new stores.
Sales for the company’s eCommerce business climbed 10.3% to $5.7 million, reflecting higher demand for the UGG brand.
Cost of goods sold increased 15.7% in the quarter under review which led to the rise in gross profit to $65.9 million from $60.7 million in the prior-year quarter. Gross profit margin was 42.7% in the second quarter of 2011 as opposed to 44.3% last year.
With the transition to a wholesale model, Deckers now manages the distribution of UGG, Teva and Simple brands in the U.K. and the UGG and Simple brands in the Benelux region. This will help capture incremental sales by selling directly to wholesale customers.
Other Financial Aspects
Deckers ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents balance of $325.2 million, down 2.6%, which excludes the cash payment of $126.6 million associated with the acquisition of substantially all of the assets related to the Sanuk brand that closed on July 1, 2011.
In the quarter, shareholders’ equity was $648.9 million, excluding a non-controlling interest of $3.2 million. This provides ample liquidity to capitalize on future growth opportunities.
During the quarter, Deckers did not buy back any shares. The company still has approximately $20 million at its disposal under its $50 million share repurchase authorization announced in June 2009. Capital expenditures for the quarter were $54.5 million.
Acquisition Update
Recently on July 1, Deckers has completed its buyout of the Sanuk brand with an initial payment of $120 million in cash. The Sanuk brand is known for its exclusive sandals and shoes and marketing.
The deal included participation payments based on the performance of the brand in the next five years and contained certain assets and liabilities of the brand. The buyout will help Deckers in gaining Sanuk’s customer base in the action sports footwear segment and will be modestly accretive to the earnings of fiscal 2011.
Walking through Guidance
Based on strong growth in all the brands and an improved outlook, management is raising its full-year outlook, including the impact of the Sanuk brand which was acquired on July 1, 2011.
The company now forecasts a total revenue growth of 26% and earnings per share increase of 17% in fiscal 2011. Earlier, Deckers had projected total revenue to increase by 21% and earnings per share to rise by 13%. Besides, the company anticipates the newly acquired Sanuk brand to generate sales in the low $20 million range in the remaining year of 2011.
Further, the outlook for fiscal 2011 includes approximately $34.5 million, or 60 cents per share, pertaining to incremental investments and expenses in 2011.
For third-quarter 2011, Deckers projects revenue growth of 38% and earnings growth of 22%, whereas the company forecasts revenue growth of 22% and earnings growth of 36% for the fourth quarter of 2011.
The current Zacks Consensus Estimate for third-quarter 2011 is $1.52 per share. Following the company’s recent improved guidance, we believe that growth of UGG and Teva brands will lead to the increase in sales. Deckers anticipate its UGG brand sales to increase approximately 25% and Teva brand sales to increase in the low 20% range in 2011.
Moreover, the company’s growth opportunities in key geographic regions, including retail store openings, and acquiring the innovative Sanuk brand will strengthen the focus on product innovation and terrain expansion facilitated the company to achieve robust growth.
Currently, we have a long-term ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. However, Deckers, which competes with Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE) and Timberland Co. (NYSE:TBL), holds a Zacks #2 Rank, which translates into a short-term ‘Buy’ recommendation.

Former NFL running back fired, ordered to trial for allegedly beating girlfriend
Phillips charged that the attack on his girlfriend several times in 2005 in San Diego, were ordered to stand trial for the crime. The preliminary hearing date of 18 June has been found.
Phillips, 33, faces eight charges, including assault a spouse or a roommate, so that criminal threats, assaults and car theft. Already in jail on charges of the other spending (see below), Phillips was 25 years in prison when sentenced in June
A star running back at Nebraska and a member of the 1994 and 1995 championship teams of the National School, Phillips is to strangle his girlfriend to the point he lost consciousness twice indicted in August 2005.
The girlfriend told police that her relationship with Phillips was over before the first incident. An exotic dancer at a time when the woman returned to her home in Mission Valley, after work, and apparently began to accumulate Phillips clothes on the floor of the room.
The woman told the court today that Phillips became enraged and choked several times during the night.
13 August 2005, they would have seen Phillips in an apartment on Aero Drive and accused her of infidelity. Phillips met the woman what her to fall behind in a bathtub.
In October last year, Phillips was sentenced to Los Angeles to 10 years in prison for driving in a field near the Coliseum in Los Angeles in August 2005 and met with three children and a man of 19 with his friend's car.
Phillips, a member of the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers, was in 2006 sentenced to seven cases of assault with a deadly weapon after the incident.

Bill Walton’s career was revived with 1985-86 Celtics
The end of an injury-plagued NBA career that had begun with high expectations in 1974 was now on the horizon.
Bill Walton, who was 32 years old in the summer of 1985, had missed 524 of a possible 902 games over a span of 11 seasons due to injuries, taking the fun out of the sport for the three-time college basketball Player of the Year at UCLA.
He had led the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA championship and was the league’s Most Valuable Player in the 1977-78 season, but staying healthy was always an issue.
Walton left the Trail Blazers after four seasons, sat out the 1978-79, the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons because of foot injuries and played only 33 games for the San Diego Clippers in 1982-83.
After being a steady contributor to the Clippers in 1983-84 and 1984-85, Walton wanted the chance to play for a contender before it was too late, and his wish was granted, thanks to the Celtics.
Walton was dealt by the Clippers, who were then based in Los Angeles, to the Celtics for Cedric Maxwell and a first-round draft pick.
For the first time since the late 1970s when the injuries began piling up, Walton was on a team playing meaningful games, a team that had won two of the previous five NBA titles and had lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1985 championship round.
Walton, whose problems began when he broke the navicular bone in his left foot in February 1978, took full advantage of his new situation.
Backing up Robert Parish, Walton played a career-high 80 games after appearing in more than 60 games just twice before.
He averaged 7.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists, won the NBA’s Sixth Man Award and fit in perfectly with the Celtics’ team-first approach, keeping the ball moving and leading an effective second unit that featured Scott Wedman and Jerry Sichting.
There were a lot of happy people in the region 25 years ago today when the Celtics clinched the 1986 championship, but few were as ecstatic as Walton, whose career had been revived.
“I can never thank the Celtics enough for not giving me my career back, but for giving me my life back,’’ said Walton in a recent telephone interview.
Walton had left the Trail Blazers on bitter terms due to a dispute about medical care regarding his foot, and with the lowly Clippers, he was always on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs were concerned.
When Walton arrived in Boston, he was rejuvenated and had the time of his life with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Parish, Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson.
“I am the most-injured athlete ever,’’ said Walton. “Of my 14 years in the NBA, 91/2 years I missed with injuries. When I first joined the NBA, I was devastated by the selfishness, the greed, the individual agendas, the lack of commitment to the team, the lack of fundamentals and the lack of discipline in the NBA.
“I spent six years on the Clippers, and I can’t even begin to tell you what a spectacular chance that I had coming to the Celtics, and it never would have happened without Larry Bird and Red Auerbach taking a chance. They were the architects of the team. They took a chance on me.’’
Walton became an instant hit with Celtics fans that season when he averaged nearly 20 minutes per game and often teamed with Bird to make some nifty passes to set up easy baskets.
All the pain and all the missed games seemed like a distant memory that year for Walton when he was such an important piece of a championship team. Being a part of a Celtics’ title team had a great impact, and that is evident today when Walton leaves a voice mail or sends an email that ends with “Go Celtics.’’
“It was incredible,’’ said Walton, who was able to play only 10 games in 1986-87 due to a foot injury. “It was incredible to live in Cambridge and ride the ‘T’ into the game, the Red Line to the Green Line to North Station. It was a joy to experience the rich and full life of New England and Cambridge and Boston.
“The people of New England have always treated me better than I deserved. The Celtics fans, the Celtics Nation, it’s impossible to express in words what that has meant to me in my life, personally.’’
Walton, a key part of John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty, said he was a Celtics fan as a youngster growing up in southern California and always harbored a desire to suit up for the franchise on the opposite coast.
“In my life, all I wanted to do was be part of something special and I got that,’’ said Walton. “The fact that it happened on my boyhood dream team, the fact that Bill Russell was my favorite player ever, on and off the court, and all those great Celtics teams were ones I followed, and then I got to come and sit on the bench and watch.
“Chick Hearn, the great Lakers announcer, is the one who taught me about Bill Russell and the Celtics, the greatness of the Celtics. I had this idealized version of Boston and the Celtics, and then when I got there, it was better than I ever dreamed – all of it.
“There’s some people in your life that, the closer you get, the better they are. The deeper you go, the better it is. I was lucky. That’s the way it was with the Celtics.
“When you get to some place and have this image and vision of how it is and then you find out it’s actually better than that, that’s like playing for John Wooden. That’s like getting to know Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan and Neil Young. I just have the fondest, fondest memories.’’
Bill Walton, who was 32 years old in the summer of 1985, had missed 524 of a possible 902 games over a span of 11 seasons due to injuries, taking the fun out of the sport for the three-time college basketball Player of the Year at UCLA.
He had led the Portland Trail Blazers to the 1977 NBA championship and was the league’s Most Valuable Player in the 1977-78 season, but staying healthy was always an issue.
Walton left the Trail Blazers after four seasons, sat out the 1978-79, the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons because of foot injuries and played only 33 games for the San Diego Clippers in 1982-83.
After being a steady contributor to the Clippers in 1983-84 and 1984-85, Walton wanted the chance to play for a contender before it was too late, and his wish was granted, thanks to the Celtics.
Walton was dealt by the Clippers, who were then based in Los Angeles, to the Celtics for Cedric Maxwell and a first-round draft pick.
For the first time since the late 1970s when the injuries began piling up, Walton was on a team playing meaningful games, a team that had won two of the previous five NBA titles and had lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1985 championship round.
Walton, whose problems began when he broke the navicular bone in his left foot in February 1978, took full advantage of his new situation.
Backing up Robert Parish, Walton played a career-high 80 games after appearing in more than 60 games just twice before.
He averaged 7.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists, won the NBA’s Sixth Man Award and fit in perfectly with the Celtics’ team-first approach, keeping the ball moving and leading an effective second unit that featured Scott Wedman and Jerry Sichting.
There were a lot of happy people in the region 25 years ago today when the Celtics clinched the 1986 championship, but few were as ecstatic as Walton, whose career had been revived.
“I can never thank the Celtics enough for not giving me my career back, but for giving me my life back,’’ said Walton in a recent telephone interview.
Walton had left the Trail Blazers on bitter terms due to a dispute about medical care regarding his foot, and with the lowly Clippers, he was always on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs were concerned.
When Walton arrived in Boston, he was rejuvenated and had the time of his life with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Parish, Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson.
“I am the most-injured athlete ever,’’ said Walton. “Of my 14 years in the NBA, 91/2 years I missed with injuries. When I first joined the NBA, I was devastated by the selfishness, the greed, the individual agendas, the lack of commitment to the team, the lack of fundamentals and the lack of discipline in the NBA.
“I spent six years on the Clippers, and I can’t even begin to tell you what a spectacular chance that I had coming to the Celtics, and it never would have happened without Larry Bird and Red Auerbach taking a chance. They were the architects of the team. They took a chance on me.’’
Walton became an instant hit with Celtics fans that season when he averaged nearly 20 minutes per game and often teamed with Bird to make some nifty passes to set up easy baskets.
All the pain and all the missed games seemed like a distant memory that year for Walton when he was such an important piece of a championship team. Being a part of a Celtics’ title team had a great impact, and that is evident today when Walton leaves a voice mail or sends an email that ends with “Go Celtics.’’
“It was incredible,’’ said Walton, who was able to play only 10 games in 1986-87 due to a foot injury. “It was incredible to live in Cambridge and ride the ‘T’ into the game, the Red Line to the Green Line to North Station. It was a joy to experience the rich and full life of New England and Cambridge and Boston.
“The people of New England have always treated me better than I deserved. The Celtics fans, the Celtics Nation, it’s impossible to express in words what that has meant to me in my life, personally.’’
Walton, a key part of John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty, said he was a Celtics fan as a youngster growing up in southern California and always harbored a desire to suit up for the franchise on the opposite coast.
“In my life, all I wanted to do was be part of something special and I got that,’’ said Walton. “The fact that it happened on my boyhood dream team, the fact that Bill Russell was my favorite player ever, on and off the court, and all those great Celtics teams were ones I followed, and then I got to come and sit on the bench and watch.
“Chick Hearn, the great Lakers announcer, is the one who taught me about Bill Russell and the Celtics, the greatness of the Celtics. I had this idealized version of Boston and the Celtics, and then when I got there, it was better than I ever dreamed – all of it.
“There’s some people in your life that, the closer you get, the better they are. The deeper you go, the better it is. I was lucky. That’s the way it was with the Celtics.
“When you get to some place and have this image and vision of how it is and then you find out it’s actually better than that, that’s like playing for John Wooden. That’s like getting to know Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan and Neil Young. I just have the fondest, fondest memories.’’

This quote speaks to anyone who has ever thought about failure. I’m sure failure was on the minds of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, and the rest of the Dallas Mavericks team in Game Two of the NBA Finals.
With six and a half minutes left, they found themselves down 88-73, all the momentum against them, and a raucous Miami crowd high fiving and dancing as if the game was already over.
But if the game was over, someone forgot to tell the Mavs. As history will show, they stormed home on the back of a 22-5 run, led by their ‘Big Three’ (Dirk and the Jasons), and stole home court advantage from the Miami Heat.
For those three, this was more than just one game. This was the culmination of years of failure. Dirk and Terry were the last surviving relics of the Dallas team that lost to the Heat five years ago in the finals, and were there again the next season when they were eliminated in shocking style by the bottom-seeded Golden State Warriors.
Jason Kidd had been there twice with the New Jersey Nets, only to see his chances fade away. For another veteran like Shawn Marion, this was his first time in the finals at all, after coming close with Phoenix.
Even coach Rick Carlisle has failed on the big stage, having lost as coach of the Indiana Pacers a decade ago. This is a team filled with people who have had their fingertips on the championship, only to see it slip away.
So when they look across the court, and see a team featuring two of the greatest players in the world (Wade and Lebron, you may have heard of them), a team with solid contributors in Bosh, Miller, Chalmers, Bibby, a more than capable coach in Eric Spoelstra, and perhaps one of the savviest General Managers in NBA history in Pat Riley, these Mavs do not see any of that.
These Mavs see a team of mostly young players who got bored with their mediocre teams, and united to try creating a super-team. The Mavericks? They’re a bunch of veterans and eager talents, hand-selected by Hollywood-friendly GM Mark Cuban, to surround the greatest Mav in history in Dirk Nowitzki.
These are guys who have done everything to win, and come short, and now it seems they won’t let it happen again. They won’t be intimidated, because they see what they need to do to reach their goal.
Let’s get more specific. If you have to pinpoint a moment in the game when Dallas turned it on, you’ll notice it’s tough to find. After Wade scored a three to put Miami up 15, it looked like Dallas was done. They called a timeout, and something must have clicked.
It was subtle at first.
Terry made a jumper, and then the team defended a Miami offence well. Got the rebound, and scored on the break. Two more foul shots from Terry, and they had brought it back to nine points. Another stop. Kidd made a big three after Dirk was double teamed. Down six.
It happened so quickly, I don’t think Miami quite knew what to do. They struggled to get any offence going, tried to run the clock down, but ultimately took bad shots and were out-rebounded all the way.
Miami shot 53 percent from the floor for the first 41 minutes, and shot nine percent for those last seven. Their only basket? A tying three from Mario Chalmers with twenty four seconds left, a three that made me feel certain this game was going to overtime.
But trusty Dirk, he did what he’s been doing all season – making up for past failures. Gone are the days where Dirk was soft. After all this time in the NBA, Dirk is now showing why some feel he is not just one of the best players in the world today, but one of the best players ever.
He scored the Mavs last nine points, including a fabulous left handed layup (with an injured finger on his left hand) with three seconds left to give the Mavs the lead for good.
For Lebron, Wade and company, if they lose this series, they’ll look back on this game and think about the mistakes they made, and what they need to do better next time. For Dallas – the oldest of the 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs – this could be the last time.

Marion and Terry are slowly losing the explosiveness that made them so dangerous, and Peja Stojakovic doesn’t quite seem to have the killer threes down pat like he used to. Down 15, in Miami, with the crowd and opposition taunting them, the Mavs realised something.
I like to think they looked back on all those missed shots, all those losses, and all those times they were trusted to make the game-winning shot and failed, and thought, perhaps now we can lay those demons to rest.
Instead of going back to Dallas down 2-0 and facing a young, talented and very dangerous Miami team, they go to Dallas even 1-1 with momentum and a shocked Miami side that isn’t yet sure what took place. Dallas now has three games at their home fortress, and if they win all three, they will finally be NBA Champions.
For Lebron and the Heat, this is just another hand of poker. They’ll come back next time and play better. But for the Dirk and the Mavs, this is their all-in moment. This time though, they’ve found a way to win. Just when it seemed it was a foregone conclusion, these Mavs fought their demons and perhaps swung this title fight in their favour.
Being a basketball coach, I often like to tell kids the story of Michael Jordan getting cut from his high school basketball team. I talk about how many shots he’s missed, and yet, how he uses that motivation to do better, so that one day he could call himself a champion.
Perhaps one day I will get to tell the kids about how the Mavs came back and found a way to win, when failure was once again staring them in the face. Failure can be used to make our success that much more beautiful.
I think there’s a seven-foot German who’d be smiling after hearing that.
This quote speaks to anyone who has ever thought about failure. I’m sure failure was on the minds of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, and the rest of the Dallas Mavericks team in Game Two of the NBA Finals.
With six and a half minutes left, they found themselves down 88-73, all the momentum against them, and a raucous Miami crowd high fiving and dancing as if the game was already over.
But if the game was over, someone forgot to tell the Mavs. As history will show, they stormed home on the back of a 22-5 run, led by their ‘Big Three’ (Dirk and the Jasons), and stole home court advantage from the Miami Heat.
For those three, this was more than just one game. This was the culmination of years of failure. Dirk and Terry were the last surviving relics of the Dallas team that lost to the Heat five years ago in the finals, and were there again the next season when they were eliminated in shocking style by the bottom-seeded Golden State Warriors.
Jason Kidd had been there twice with the New Jersey Nets, only to see his chances fade away. For another veteran like Shawn Marion, this was his first time in the finals at all, after coming close with Phoenix.
Even coach Rick Carlisle has failed on the big stage, having lost as coach of the Indiana Pacers a decade ago. This is a team filled with people who have had their fingertips on the championship, only to see it slip away.
So when they look across the court, and see a team featuring two of the greatest players in the world (Wade and Lebron, you may have heard of them), a team with solid contributors in Bosh, Miller, Chalmers, Bibby, a more than capable coach in Eric Spoelstra, and perhaps one of the savviest General Managers in NBA history in Pat Riley, these Mavs do not see any of that.
These Mavs see a team of mostly young players who got bored with their mediocre teams, and united to try creating a super-team. The Mavericks? They’re a bunch of veterans and eager talents, hand-selected by Hollywood-friendly GM Mark Cuban, to surround the greatest Mav in history in Dirk Nowitzki.
These are guys who have done everything to win, and come short, and now it seems they won’t let it happen again. They won’t be intimidated, because they see what they need to do to reach their goal.
Let’s get more specific. If you have to pinpoint a moment in the game when Dallas turned it on, you’ll notice it’s tough to find. After Wade scored a three to put Miami up 15, it looked like Dallas was done. They called a timeout, and something must have clicked.
It was subtle at first.
Terry made a jumper, and then the team defended a Miami offence well. Got the rebound, and scored on the break. Two more foul shots from Terry, and they had brought it back to nine points. Another stop. Kidd made a big three after Dirk was double teamed. Down six.
It happened so quickly, I don’t think Miami quite knew what to do. They struggled to get any offence going, tried to run the clock down, but ultimately took bad shots and were out-rebounded all the way.
Miami shot 53 percent from the floor for the first 41 minutes, and shot nine percent for those last seven. Their only basket? A tying three from Mario Chalmers with twenty four seconds left, a three that made me feel certain this game was going to overtime.
But trusty Dirk, he did what he’s been doing all season – making up for past failures. Gone are the days where Dirk was soft. After all this time in the NBA, Dirk is now showing why some feel he is not just one of the best players in the world today, but one of the best players ever.
